Appearing at first glance to be a solid block of wood, the Gemma storage box is a delightful trompe l’oeil. To the untrained eye, Gemma is a simple, solid block with no apparent way to gain entry – prying eyes won’t go anywhere near it. The lid is held in place via a magnet, meaning it is perfectly integrated, with no hinges or joins visible. 7 cm deep and 18.5 cm long, it’s spacious enough to hold a trove of your belongings.
Designed by Gemma Holt
A Blackpool native, Gemma Holt graduated from both Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal College of Art in London to eventually work in Martino Gamper’s internationally renowned studio. Simple and pure in their form, Holt’s works often have a conceptually rigorous thinking behind them - her Gemma storage box, which appears to be a solid block of wood at first, is in fact a typical trompe l’oeil.
